Last year a poll a revealed that the percentage of men who visit salons had soared to 66%, a statistic simply verified through use of your own salon software. It may not seem like much, particularly compared to the number of women who make regular appointments, but it did cause us to notice a shift in the industry. Men are now coming into salons for more than their monthly haircut and are apparently vainer than ever! Reportedly, Gary Barlow, Brad Pitt and even Jeremy Paxman appear to be driving a current trend for a hairier face. However, what are the men doing who simply can’t grow the beard they want?

The number of men searching for beard transplants has increased dramatically in recent periods according to the Society of Hair Restoration. Dr Bessam, who carried out the world’s first facial hair transplant, said on the matter: ïA full beard is very much a statement look, and it goes in and out of fashion. For the last 12 to 18 months, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of men coming to my practice wanting to fill in bald patches or thicken wisps of hair.’

While many salons cannot accommodate these kinds of procedures, it is important to note that more and more men are starting to take greater care in their appearance, and seeking help and advice on how to do so. How male-friendly is your salon? Do you see many male clients? The male hairdressing market is estimated to be worth £1.2bn alone, so if you aren’t already marketing toward your male clients, it might be a good idea to start considering how you might be able to in the future.
