As we come into the busiest time of year for hair, beauty and barbering salons it is important to ensure that client consultations are carried out in detail and to the full extent, not quickly rushed through.

The client consultation is the most important part of any appointment, whether the client is visiting for a hair or barbering service. The reason being? To ensure both you and the client are on the same page, and both agree on the service in hand and how you are going to achieve their desired look.

Within the consultation the first point of call is establishing the client’s goals. Whether this be a specific style or colour, it is essential for you as the stylist to find out exactly what they want to achieve. By establishing this, you can discuss if this can be achieved in 1 appointment or if this requires more to get them to their desired look.

More often than not, clients who are visiting for colour bring reference guides from instagram to show what they would like their hair to look like. Dependant on the colour and current condition of the client’s hair depends on the amount of time it will take to achieve the desired look.

Once this has been established, discuss what the appointment will entail. Discuss in detail what you are going to do and roughly how long this will take. Clients love nothing more than being put at ease and knowing exactly what will happen throughout the appointment. This will also show them that you are an expert in your field.

Once you are both happy with everything, it’s time to undertake the appointment. Throughout the appointment itself, always explain what you are doing, as well as engaging in polite chat. This again puts the client at ease. It’s all about communication – there can never be enough.

The client consultation will forever be the most important aspect within any appointment, and is something that should be carried out in detail.
